Cane Bank Application, Augusta Georgia Council of the Blind Chapter Project

Apply for a free cane from the Augusta Georgia Council of the Blind Chapter Project Cane Bank Application.

1. Eligibility Requirements

  1. Must be legally blind as determined by an eye doctor
  2. Be unable to obtain a free white mobility cane from another source (such as the VA, Vocational Rehabilitation, or a school system)

Priority Consideration is based on available funding and demand, priority will be given in the following order:

  1. Augusta GCB Membership
  2. GCB Membership
  3. Non-GCB, Non-ACB membership (based on need or safety concern)

Applicants are not eligible if a free mobility cane is available through another organization or program.

2. Type of Cane Provided

  1. Must be considered a white cane for the blind for mobility purposes
  2. Can be folding or non-folding
  3. Cane tip type will be selected based on the recipient’s personal preference.
  4. While the shaft of the cane must be white, the handle grip and lower section of the shaft can be a color choice based on personal preference of recipient
  5. Support canes will not be considered, should be available via medical insurance, as these are prescribed to prevent falls not for blindness
  6. Type of cane, cane tip, shipping address will be managed by Low Vision Supply

3. Orientation and Mobility (COMS) Experience

  1. Recipients should have received Orientation and Mobility (O and M) training at some point in their life
  2. Newly blind recipients should have a formal O and M assessment with recommendation for a white cane, including length and type of tip by a professional in the field

4. Frequency of Cane Issuance

  1. Only one cane may be issued every 24 months
  2. No exceptions will be made for canes that are lost, stolen, or broken

5. Cane Source and Handling

  1. ALL canes will be obtained through Low Vision Supply
  2. After submitting an application, applicants will be contacted by Low Vision Supply to confirm cane preferences and shipping information.

6. Funding Per Cane 

  1. Funds will not exceed $60.00 per cane, to include cane, tip, shipping and handling.
  2. The cost allowed per cane can be reset annually as prices are subject to change.
